Grec Festival in Barcelona

The new direction of the Festival Grec in Barcelona has 68 shows scheduled for this year.

The 36th edition of the event, presented by its new director Ramon Simó, will have a strong presence of international companies, in total 30, representing 44% of the program.

The festival, to be held from 1 to 31 July in various locations in Barcelona, has several new features compared to previous years. Among them, an increase of co-productions, which rise up to 26, and a firm commitment to bring culture to the city, offering several free events. As a prime example, the opening of the Grec is open for everyone for the first time in a ceremony to be held on June 30 in the Passeig Lluís Companys in with musical performances by The Kung-Fu Troba Canteca of Macao. There will also be road shows in order to bring culture to various civic centers of neighborhoods and districts.

However, the main location of the Grec 2012 will be the Montjuïc again. The Olympic mountain is the artistic epicenter of the festival, with activities in cultural venues in the area as the Teatre Grec, the Mercat de les Flors, the Lliure Theatre or the Theatre Institute. In addition, two new spaces were admitted: the Carp Magic Fountain, in the Mies Van Der Rohe pavilion, and the Hub tent in Plaça Margarida Xirgu.

Programme

The programme of the Grec is divided into four disciplines: dance, theater, music and circus. Among the dance program, the proposals include international like the French company Marie Chouinard, with his show Body Remix Goldberg Variations; Vesturpot Icelanders, or the South African choreographer Robyn Orlin. The musicals, set among the Teatre Grec and Margarida Xirgu Plaza, will feature Santi Balmes (Love of Lesbian), Martyrdom, Quimi Portet and Little Boy and others.
