New Year’s Eve 2013

Did you know that the location of the New Year’s countdown has changed? The new place is at the magic fountain of Montjuïc instead of Plaça Catalunya.

People will gather at the fountain and countdown to the New Year while eating 12 grapes or watch from home as the event is broadcast and then when its midnight you will see a spectacular show of fireworks.

Eating 12 grapes as the bells chimes 12 times before the New Year is an old Spanish tradition that has spread to other Hispanic countries such as the countries in the South America.

12 o'clock

If you manage to eat all 12 grapes during the 12 bell chimes it is said that you will have a rich year.

It is nearly impossible to finish the grapes in town as you should swallow the grapes whole to keep up with the chimes. It is a funny tradition though, beginning the New Year with seeing your friends and family with their mouth full of grapes 🙂
