For many Christians the Three Kings Day is the day to give presents to their children instead of doing it on Christmas Eve.
So is the tradition in Catalunya and the rest of Spain also.
On the Three Kings Eve, the day before, there are several parades in Barcelona. The biggest though is the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos in Barcelona. With about 3 hours long parade with a convoy of 1km long parade floats and people, the route is about 5km long.
It is a parade not to miss! Especially for children and those whose like candy as the “Kings and their followers” will throw out candy to the crowd.
The next day, the Three Kings Day is the time for handing out presents. The children and adults are as excited as those whose gets their presents during Christmas Eve.
The legend says that three kings came to Bethlehem on the 5th of January following the brightest star in the sky. When they met baby Jesus they had brought gold, frankincense and myrrh as gifts to him, but on their journey home they also handed out smaller gifts to children that they met in villages in their path. So that is why Spanish children write to the Three Kings so that they can bring them gifts on the 6th of January.
If you are in Barcelona enjoy the parades and we hope that you get the gifts that you asked for 🙂
