Typical dishes of Catalan food

Travelling does not only mean seeing new buildings and monuments, but also consists in tasting the local food traditions !

Today we will teach you how to make a typical Catalan meal !

This is a very easy-to-make and delicious appetizer. All you need is some slices of bread (you can toast them if you want), olive oil, garlic, salt and oil.

Start by putting the garlic on the bread, and then spread the tomato sauce on it. Finish with some salt and olive oil.

As garniture, you can put the typical Catalan “escalivada”, which consists of grilled vegetables, such as eggplant, red peppers, tomatoes and onions.

What is the famous calçot ? A mix between an onion and leek, is by and large one of the most beloved products of this region in Spain. Sweet, tender and absolutely delicious when dipped in romesco sauce, calçots in Barcelona are wildly popular, as well as the tradition that comes with them.

It is a winter meal, roughly between the months of December and March, when the calçot is in season, locals enjoy the “calçotada”, a winter BBQ where the calçots are packed tight on a grill, charred and then dipped in that rich and nutty romesco sauce.

After piles upon piles of these calçots come all types of grilled meats, which pair perfectly with romesco sauce as well.

Botifarra amb mongetes

The main dish is also very easy to make! “Botifarra” is a type of sausage that is made out of pork and spice and can be eaten raw or cooked. Further, you need “mongetes” (beans), olive oil, parsley and garlic.

First of all, boil the beans in water. Allow them to cool before frying them in a pan with olive oil. Cut the botifarra in bits and fry them as well in a frying pan, but don’t mix the beans and the botifarra!

When both the botifarra and the mongetes are fried, put them on a plate and finish with garlic and parsley!

Fricandó

The Fricandó is a Catalan dish of veal sauce, finely chopped mixed with mushrooms, traditionally fresh porcini mushrooms from the woods.
However, the dish can be decorated with other ingredients such as onions, vegetables etc.

Crema catalana

We finish our meal with the famous crema catalana! Some compare it with the French crème brûlée, but it uses different ingredients and has a different taste. To make this delicious dessert, you will need sugar, eggs, a cinnamon stick, a lemon, milk and cornstarch.

Start by beating 4 egg yolks and ¾ a cup of sugar until it becomes stiff. Grate the lemon rind and add it with the cinnamon stick to the egg-sugar mixture. Now add 2 cups of milk and the cornstarch. Heat it slowly until it becomes thick, and then remove the pot immediately from the heat.

Divide the mixture in different portions and let it cool for some hours (preferably out of the fridge). Before serving, caramelise some sugar and put it on top of the portions.
